Earlier this week I drove by Flip Pizza (526 Jericho) in Mineola. We’d reported last month that the Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizzeria was going to close shortly. Well, it’s closed. One of the facade’s glass panels has been replaced by wood, and the glorious, orange-tiled pizza oven is gone. (I'm thinking that the only way they could get the oven out of the restaurant was through that facade.) Sad news; I really liked that pie. People of Mineola: You didn’t?
Heading west, I was surprised to see a Vintage Osteria Italiana sign at 2232 Jericho. This was the address of the exceedingly short-lived Testaccio at the Gardens, which sprang up in May, impressed us with its authentic Roman cuisine and then closed less than two months later (leaving high and dry patrons who had booked tables). Vintage was the restaurant’s pre-Testaccio identity and whether it will re-emerge is anyone’s guess. A sign on the door said, “Closed for summer vacation."
Off Jericho: For the past few weeks, no one's been answering the phone at Prime Burgers at 1008 Willis Ave. in Albertson. A number of readers have reported that the place is apparently closed for renovation.
Vintage predated Testaccio. Will it also succeed it?
