Devotees of Ocean Grill in Freeport will want to get over there soon. The restaurant, which received a two-star Newsday review back in 2010, will serve its last meal on Friday. This is because the place lost its lease, according to an email from the restaurant.
Ocean Grill — near but not on the water — boasted a hopping patio scene with live music. What I will remember most is the cooking of chef Julio Rivas, who characterized his globally influenced menu as “my food.” I learned how much he owned what he cooked after I asked to substitute another dressing for the raspberry vinaigrette in a roasted beet and poached apple salad. “No,” came the answer from the kitchen. To my surprise, though, instead of tasting like liquefied lollipop, as is the way of most raspberry vinaigrettes, Rivas' version was bright and fresh, more tart than sweet. To date, his is the only one I'd have again.
Ocean Grill will be open for lunch and dinner Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
