A new, family-style Italian restaurant is taking over the former site of Puglia of Little Italy in East Meadow. Vero Italiano formally is expected to fly its own tricolor in three or four weeks, said general manager Antonion Lofoco.
The chef is Antonio Improto. His menu features traditional Italian-American cooking in portions for two or more. Appetizers ($12-$18) go from baked clams oreganata and eggplant rollatine to hot and cold antipasti. Pastas ($15-$24) include a timballo with macarono, chopped meat, eggplant and vegetables with mozzarella, linguine with white or red clam sauce and rigatoni Bolognese. Main courses ($12-$32) include: stuffed pork chops, chicken scarpariello, rack of lamb, rabbit, quail, red snapper Livornese and zuppa di pesce.
The restaurant is open, with the new menu, but you'll still see signs for Puglia of Little Italy. 2366 Hempstead Tpke., East Meadow; 516-342-6500.
