It's Long Island vs. Manhattan as eight local chefs fire up their grills on July 11 to take on their New York City counterparts. All 16 chefs are competing for the title of 2014 GrillHampton Champion as Robert Irvine, star of Food Network’s "Restaurant Impossible," plays host at Sayre Park in Bridgehampton.
Chefs including Tom Schaudel (A Mano), Victor Tapia (The Palm), and Arthur Wolf (Smokin Wolf) represent the East End against the likes of Harold Moore (Commerce), Ben Zwicker (T Bar NYC), and last year’s winner, Elizabeth Karmel (Hill Country Barbecue), from Manhattan.
The games begin at 8 p.m., when a $120 general admission ticket grants access to the tasting grounds. Live music by The Nancy Atlas Project accompanies the evening’s grill fare along with beer and specialty cocktails. Attendees are welcome to cast votes for their favorites in the “Fire it Up Battle.”
But the final decision is in the hands of the judges, which include Irvine’s fellow Food Network personalities Alex Guarnaschelli and Marc Murphy, along with restaurateur David Burke, publisher Dan Rattiner, butcher-to-the-stars Pat LaFrieda, and litigator-bon-vivant Bruce Bronster. The festivities should wrap up by 11 p.m.
The GrillHampton contest on Friday evening is the first of two events that comprise Dan’s Taste of Summer, which continues the following evening. At Saturday’s Taste of Two Forks, attendees can try dishes from more than forty Long Island chefs (click here to see the full list), sip on wines from more than a dozen wineries, and sample goods from vendors like Joe & Liza’s Ice Cream, Hampton Coffee Company, and Anke’s Fit Bakery. Taste of Two Forks is hosted by Katie Lee and Geoffrey Zakarian, stars of Food Network’s The Kitchen.
A general admission ticket to Taste of Two Forks runs $160 for access from 7:30 to 10 p.m.; $240 VIP tickets for early entry and Champagne at 6:30 p.m. are already sold out. For those with a big appetite for Dan’s Taste of Summer, a general admission weekend package is available for $260 (the VIP package — at $340 — is sold out). Click here to buy tickets.
