Deli on Rye in Albertson has ladled out its last matzo ball.
A two-star 2008 Newsday review read: “Whatever your ethnic or cultural background, you can always find comfort in a bowl of chicken soup, a hot pastrami sandwich, a potato knish.” The chicken soup at Deli on Rye was as close as restaurant fare got to my grandmother’s own. And the pastrami sandwich — just fatty and peppery enough — approached perfection.
Gustatory solace of this sort is becoming increasingly hard to find as kosher delis on Long Island close without new ones jumping in to take their places.
