Judging from the response, Port Jefferson has been secretly chomping at the bit for frosted doughnuts in flavors such as salted caramel and key-lime puff.

“We sold out every day for the first week,” said Lisa Harris, who opened the doughnut shop East Main & Main on June 10 with her partner, Robert Strehle.

Harris is a longtime fixture on the Long-Island food scene who ran Caffe Portofino in Northport before founding, and selling, Morning Sunshine Breakfast Cookies.

After a spell outside of the food arena, Harris realized, “I really missed it.” She and Strehle honed the idea for a doughnut shop, and when they found the right location on East Main Street, they set about creating a vibe “that was sweet and homey, but also with an industrial edge,” Harris said.

Inside are two eat-in counters, as well as a glass case filled with nine seasonal flavors daily, as well as two or three specials, whose recipes were honed with the help of their die-hard tasting team: the five children Harris and Strehle have between them.

Their yeast-based, fried doughnuts — which range from standard-bearers such as chocolate frosted to more outlandish creations such as PB & JZ, a doughnut topped with crunchy peanut butter and strawberry jam frosting — are baked and decorated to their specifications at a Brooklyn bakery, and delivered daily. They cost $3.25 each.

East Main & Main’s brewed coffee comes from For Five Coffee Roasters in Maspeth, Queens, and they also offer cold-brewed coffee from Sail Away Coffee Co. Shelves at the front of the store are stocked with items such as chocolate and preserves from artisanal producers.

East Main & Main is open every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., or until they sell out.
