In the years since Grace's restaurant (and before that, hot-dog stand) departed, leaving countless forlorn frank-ophiles, the land where it stood gave way to a bank. Any traffic-scarred passerby. either heading to or coming off LIE exit 70, needing a hot-dog fix, could just go to the ATM and maybe head to the supermarket down the road.
But, announced by red banners and a welcoming parklike locale, here comes Between the Bun, which has moved in just south of the old Grace's site.
The hot dogs are steamy and good. And you can expand on to the traditional frank feast with a four-cheese panino, hamburger, sausage, even a lobster roll. You'll also find several umbrella-shaded picnic tables. A hot dog is $2; there also may be a $6.50 special for three franks, including a soft drink, potato chips and a pickle. All the familiar toppings are available. The lobster roll goes for $12; the cheese panino, $6.
Between the Bun is open six days from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m., and on Sunday to 9 p.m. Exit 70, Manorville, east side.
