After an 11-year run in Smithtown, Famous Dave’s, one of two Long Island locations for the Minnesota-based barbecue chain, has closed. The decor was log-cabin kitsch, while the smoked meats were dressed with sauces on the sweet side. The Westbury location remains open.

The closing is part of a corporate refocusing which has included selling company-owned stores to franchisees as well as opening branches outside North America, beginning with its first location in Abu Dhabi, which opened in the Spring.

Famous Dave’s was founded by Dave Anderson in Hayward, Wisconsin in 1994. By 2004, Anderson, who is an American Indian of Choctaw and Ojibwa descent, was appointed the Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs for the Department of the Interior, a position he held for a year. He was also an original investor in Rainforest Cafe before it was purchased by Landry’s Restaurants Inc.
