As its name lets on, Sakura Japanese Hibachi Sushi Asian Fusion restaurant covers many bases. The 3-week -old Farmingdale spot moved into the space once home to Wasabi Hibachi.
Several big hibachi stations occupy the front space; there are also individual tables in the back, where I had lunch one recent afternoon (seems the clanging, flaming and flinging doesn't get going big time until the dinner hours).
The sushi bar was running on all cylinders. I ordered a sushi-sashimi combination from the lunch menu and was impressed by the freshness and flavor of the fish on my plate, which also included a fine spicy tuna roll. The absence of cooked shrimp and surimi (the stand-in for crab so popular on such platters) was another plus.
From a small roster entitled “South East Asian lunch,” my companion ordered chicken with Thai coconut curry sauce. The sliced poultry was tender, the sauce fragrant and subtly spiced. My only cavil was the presence of canned baby corn with an otherwise fresh assortment of vegetables. There ought to be a law.
From now through the end of December, I’m told, the restaurant is giving a 15 percent discount on all takeout, delivery and dine-in.
Sakura Japanese Hibachi Sushi Asian Fusion is at 283 Main St., Farmingdale, 516-843-8188.
