Il Fortino Restaurant & Lounge has opened in Glen Cove.

The name means "the fort," and the new eatery is a bastion of traditional Italian and Italian-American fare that adds some contemporary dishes. It's situated adjacent to The Metropolitan, a major caterer that is owned by the same team.

Expect appetizers in the $8 to $20 range; salads, $12 to $15; pastas, $15 to $25; and main courses, $20 to $35.

Openers include baked clams, polenta fries, eggplant caponata, skewered and fried lobster with lemon aioli, yellowfin tuna tartare, and stuffed hot peppers filled with spicy sausage.

The pastas take in spaghetti alla carbonara, fettuccine all'Alfredo, rigatoni alla Bolognese,  linguine with clam sauce, penne alla vodka, baked manicotti, and baked ziti. Risotto with shrimp, scallops, and lobster also is a specialty.

Main courses include marinated skirt steak with chimichurri and Calabrian hot peppers, rib-eye steak finished with an espresso-infused demi-glace, veal chop Marsala, and pesto-crusted Chilean sea bass garnished with tomatoes.

A vegetarian menu highlights tomato bruschetta and beefsteak tomato stuffed with couscous, pine nuts, and olives,

Pizzette also are offered, with toppings such as burrata, meatballs, spinach, and garlic-sauteed shrimp, which caps a Margherita pie. 

Kevin Velez is the chef. His experience includes cooking at Hurricane Grill  & Wings in Hartsdale.

Il Fortino is open Sunday to Wednesday, from 4 to 10 p.m.; and  4 to 11 p.m. Thursday to Saturday.
