Neither Guy Reuge of Mirabelle nor Gerry Hayden of The North Fork Table & Inn will be winning a James Beard Foundation Award this year. They reached the semifinals, but didn't make the cut for the final five nominees.

Long Island currently is in the "Northeast" category, where chefs compete with their peers from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and New York State. New York City's five boroughs are in a separate category.

I'm sure the quintet still in the running is a strong group. Three of the five Northeast finalists are from Boston or surrounding Boston. Another is from Piermont, N.Y.; the last, from Ogunquit, Maine.

But I doubt many of the voters who selected them have tasted the food of Reuge or Hayden in the last year. I'd guess they haven't been at the table of many other talented chefs in Nassau and Suffolk. either.

Maybe some day, they will. Meantime, be glad Mirabelle and The North Fork Table are in the neighborhood.

I've already got a few nominees for next year, too.
