Long Island restaurateurs are, increasingly, stepping up in ways big and small to aid victims of superstorm Sandy. Expect the list below to grow in the coming days:
The Vine Wine Bar (2259 Merrick Rd., Merrick, 516-812-7883) is holding a fundraiser to benefit the Superstorm Sandy relief efforts on Saturday, Nov. 10, from noon to 3 p.m. The wine bar will be closed for business, but will be offering a free glass of wine for every $25 donated to the American Red Cross. (Wine will be served only to patrons 21 and older; TIPS-certified employees will ensure that no one is “overserved;” water and coffee will also be provided.)
In addition, Vine will be collecting supplies to be donated to residents of Long Beach. Bartender Stephen Arnone said that he had been working closely with relief organizations to learn which specific items are most needed: Mops, candles, packaged socks and underwear, garbage bags, mouthwash, for example, are much higher priorities than canned food. Swingbellys BBQ (97 Broadway, Lynbrook, 516-341-7227) will be donating 10 percent of its total profits, from now through the end of 2012, to the Long Beach victims of Hurricane Sandy. The barbecue restaurant is also running a national campaign to allow people nationwide to donate a takeout Thanksgiving turkey dinner to anyone in need on Long Island. Call for details.
Thyme (8 Tower St., Roslyn, 516-625-2566) will be open to anyone in need to a place to charge electronic devices and phones as well as stay warm. The restaurant also will be offering free coffee and tea. Additionally, Thyme will not charge for any child meals for kids 10 and under. People can also drop off canned food for the restaurant to donate to a local pantry.
Also in Roslyn, MP Taverna (1363 Old Northern Blvd., Roslyn, 516-686-6486) is offering hot soup for takeout. Bring a pot and the restaurant will fill it for you. The service will run until power is restored in your neighborhood.
"Like many others on Long Island, I have been sitting in the dark and cold for more than a week now," Michael Psilakis, the chef and owner, says. "With this cold front now falling upon us, I felt like we should do something good for everyone and hope the soup brings some warmth to those without it."
On the menu (among other soups): minestrone, tomato-brandy, and sweet-and-sour onion orzo. The soup kitchen is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
The Fifth Season Restaurant (34 E. Broadway, Port Jefferson, 631-477-8500), which is extending its Restaurant Week menu through Thanksgiving, has set up a table in its entryway for diners to donate $2 or more to the Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy relief. In return, they’ll get two house-baked chocolate chip cookies. The restaurant is also giving out holiday gift “scratch-offs” with every check, entitling recipients to a discount -- from 10 to 100 percent -- off their next check through March 31, 2013.
Jackson’s (6005 Jericho Tpke., Commack, 631-462-0822) has turned its party room into a haven for anyone to get warm, charge electronics, watch TV and use Wi-Fi. There will also be free soda, coffee and candy. “Nobody has to order food and nobody has to leave at any particular time,” said co-owner Shelby Bloom. The place is also selling $5 hurricane shots, the full amount to be donated to the Red Cross.
