Portugal is taking a stab at the Jericho location that has defeated restaurants serving steak, Chinese and modern Italian.
Lisbon Café Grill is the newest tenant at 399 Jericho Tpke., an oft-churned address since the long-running Capriccio closed in 2005 (and was followed by Palio, Philippe by Philippe Chow and, most recently, Vintage Bar & Grill).
Lisbon Café Grill is owned by Agripino Ferreira and Avelino and Manuel Pinto, also partners at Lisbon Café in Carle Place. For the Pinto brothers, the opening is also a homecoming: Avelino Pinto said that he and his brother Manuel had both worked at Capriccio for more than a decade starting in 1989.
The menus at both Lisbon locations are almost identical. Appetizers, almost all under $10, include amêijoas à Portuguesa (clams steamed with pork sausage), bolinhos de bacalhau (codfish cakes) and polvo à lagareiro (grilled octopus).
Mains include parrilhada de mariscos (grilled seafood combo), filet of sole with almond, bacalhau a lagareiro (grilled codfish with potatoes and olive oil), parrilhada de carne (mixed meat grill) and chanfana de cabrito (goat braised in red wine). Most mains come in two sizes. Single servings hover between $20 and $26, most doubles from $37 to $46
