Among restaurant promotions, Mosaic’s may not match the nuttiness of the late Palio’s free-dinner giveaway in April 2009, but it comes close. For four nights, June 1 through 4, the exuberant, chef-driven eatery will be offering free wines by the glass. As many as you want. For free. Your table wants a bottle of one of the dozen or so that are being poured? OK, they’ll bring a bottle to your table.
The wines on offer don’t come in a jug or box. From their 150-bottle list, chef-owners Jonathan Contes and Tate Morris have chosen wines that they think their customers will particularly enjoy. “We’ll be pouring a Paulinshof riesling from Germany,” said Contes, “that is drinking great right now. It’s right smack in the middle of dry and sweet, and we’ve got a bunch of it.” Other featured wines will include Decimo Pinot Noir from Kartauserhof (Austria) and Audacia Cabernet Sauvignon from Stellenbosch (South Africa).
What’s behind all this largesse? “We’ve been in business for almost five years because we have really loyal customers,” Contes said. “We want to give something back to them.”
As for the menu, it will be a surprise. Contes and Morrison create a new five-course tasting menu every day. Dinner is always $54 and, like we said, the wine will be free.
Mosaic is at 418 North Country Rd., St. James, 631-584-2058.
