Paumanok Vineyards in Aquebogue wins 'Winery of the Year' at 2015 New York Wine & Food Classic

Paumanok Vineyards of Aquebogue won the "Winery of the Year" award on Monday at the 2015 New York Wine & Food Classic.

Paumanok also won a "best of class" honor for its 2014 Semi-Dry Riesling.

"We're very happy," said Charles Massoud, who established the winery with his wife, Ursula. They started growing grapes on a former potato farm in 1983. Massoud added, "It's a team effort." The Massouds' sons, Kareem, Salim and Nabeel, run the day-to-day operations. Kareem is the winemaker. "Our three sons are really passionate about what they're doing ... this is great for our sons. They're doing all the work."

Two Paumanok wines, the 2010 Assemblage red blend and the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Tuthills Lane Vineyard, were named among the top 12 wines produced on Long Island in Newsday in 2013.

McCall Wines in Cutchogue received the award for best oaked chardonnay; Osprey's Dominion in Peconic won for best cabernet sauvignon; Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead for best pinot noir and sauvignon blanc; Harbes Vineyard of Mattituck for best merlot; and Sparkling Pointe in Southold for best vinifera sparking white.

This is the second time Paumanok has won winery-of-the-year honors. Last year, Macari Vineyards won it; in 2013, McCall did.

Judges tasted more than 850 New York State wines. The Governor's Cup, the competition's biggest prize, was awarded to Ventosa Vineyards in Geneva. The event was held upstate in Canandaigua.
