So, I see "Nine," knot my thin black tie, put on the sunglasses and take the sports car to La Piazza for a taste of "Italia." Well, I enjoyed the movie (very good Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard, Fergie in full voice), and arrived at the Plainview eatery in a pizza-pasta kind of mood. Beats all that smoking, too.
The popular spot does well, probably in more categories than the film will at the Oscars. Flavorful pasta e fagioli, respectable rice balls; crisp and tasty brick-oven pizzas, especially one capped with eggplant, ricotta, Parmesan and mozzarella and another devoted simply to Margherita. For a huskier meal: cavatelli alla Bolognese gets a flourish with a scoop of ricotta; and fusilli casalinga, some personality from broccoli rabe, grilled chicken, roasted garlic.
They'd all help break Guido's writer's block, and probably ensure that he wouldn't depart on a Vespa.
La Piazza is at 1137 Old Country Rd., Plainview; 516-938-0800. Another La Piazza is at 2191 Merrick Rd., Merrick; 516-546-2500.
At the NYC premiere ... not at La Piazza.
