Nassau County finally has its own dedicated ramen shop: Ramen Kyoto has opened on Hicksville Road in Bethpage.
The Japanese noodles, well established in New York City, have recently slithered into Suffolk — Momi Ramen in East Hampton and Slurp in Port Jefferson — but while many Japanese restaurants in Nassau have a bowl or two of ramen on the menu, none has devoted itself to the dish.
Kyoto serves seven types of ramen including the classic tonkotsu with pork belly; shoyu (soy) broth with choice of pork, chicken or vegetable; and the vegetarian agedashi tofu, made with miso and tomato and topped with tofu, mushrooms and vegetables. Tan tan noodles, with minced chicken or pork, is a take on dan dan noodles which, like the owners here, hail from China.
Also on the menu are home-style Japanese specialties such as udon noodles, donburi (rice bowls), hibachi-grilled meats and curry platters. Most of the noodles and entrees cost less than $11. Appetizers (dumplings, buns and such) are all $6 or less.
Ramen Kyoto takes up residence next door to one of Nassau’s most popular Chinese restaurants, Orient. There is a small dining room, but the focus seems to be on takeout. Online ordering is available, and soups are packed with the broth separate from the noodles so that they don’t get soggy.
