A long-standing Queens bakery has opened its first Long Island location in Oyster Bay, bringing with it long-honed recipes for cannoli, pine nut cookies and frittata, as well as Sicilian-style pan pizza that has drawn generations of New Yorkers to Astoria.
After more than 40 years at its original location, Rose & Joe’s Italian Bakery opened in mid-May on Main Street in Oyster Bay with doughy offerings both sweet and savory, baked on premises as well as at the mother ship. At 6:30 a.m., customers can start the day with espresso, coffee, muffins and frittata. Throughout the day, they’ll find fresh-baked breads, cannoli, cheesecake, cookies, and sandwiches and wraps, anchored by a signature muffuletta sandwich of semolina bread loaded with cured meats, provolone, and mozzarella. The bakery closes at 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 5 p.m. on Sundays. A handful of tables provide seating for those who prefer to eat on premises.
Joe Porretto founded Rose & Joe’s Bakery in Astoria in the mid-1970s. His son, Anthony Porretto, now runs the business, which includes overseeing the bakery’s oft-feted pizza, baked in the Sicilian style. “It’s not too thick, not too thin, but just right,” Porretto said of the rectangular pie.
Porretto has been coming to Oyster Bay with his family since he was a child, and his experiences in the hamlet, including fishing, drew him to the community. “I had a lot of feedback that [Oyster Bay] could use a bakery,” said Porretto.
