Super Bowl drinks: The bacon and beer cocktail you have to try

Whatever goes down in Minneapolis today, it will be a first. Either the first time the Philadelphia Eagles have won a Super Bowl since the game was created in 1970, or the first time an NFL player (Patriots quarterback Tom Brady) has won six Super Bowls.

To make this day even more special, an asteroid will pass by the earth.

Though beer reigns during the Super Bowl, some people might prefer mixed drinks. To suit both camps, try this twist on a Salty Dog, though with the addition of beer — basically a salty-sweet beer cocktail garnished with bacon. It uses ingredients (vodka, sugar, salt, grapefruit juice, beer, bacon) you probably already have on hand. And since it’s neither green nor blue, but a copper tone, it’s nonpartisan.

A First Time for Everything

1 grapefruit, halved

Coarse sea salt

Ice

1 1⁄2 ounces vodka (or gin)

3 ounces grapefruit juice (preferably fresh-squeezed)

1 tablespoon simple syrup*

Wheat beer / witbier (I used Southhampton Publick House Double White, but lager would do)

Bacon for garnish

1. Chill a tumbler, then rub the cut end of grapefruit along the edge and dredge through coarse sea salt.

2. Add ice, vodka, juice and simple syrup, then top off with beer and stir to combine. Garnish with half a bacon slice (or grapefruit peel), and serve.

*To make simple syrup: Combine equal parts fine sugar and boiling water in a heatproof vessel, then stir until sugar is dissolved. It will keep for a week in the refrigerator.
