Had a somewhat skewed experience at Wild Fig in Syosset the other day. The restaurant, which opened a few months ago, is the third link in a Mediterranean chain that began in Glen Cove and also includes a Garden City venue.
A new menu item – grilled calamari – turned out to be a smash hit. Ringlets and tentacles of marinated squid were threaded onto skewers and grilled to crispy-smoky tenderness. Not a rubber band in the bunch.
But then, there were my chicken kebabs: overdone, dry and uninteresting. Had the chef fallen asleep at the fire?
Great baklava, though — super-flaky and not too sweet.
