The Port Firehouse Bar & Grille in Freeport is now open, a neighborhood bar and restaurant in a 1916 building that used to be — what else? — a firehouse, of course.

Having worked in the neighborhood at a bar and restaurant for nearly 20 years, business owner Arion Balalas was smitten with the building and said he wanted it to become something that appealed to a wide array of locals.

So he’s created a place where Freeporters and those passing through will find dishes like Cincinnati chili over spaghetti dressed with shredded Cheddar. Also among starters, there’s clams oreganata, mac ’n cheese bites and a salumi board. Look for a range of burgers as well as sandwiches from turkey Reuben to a Cajun chicken number. Starters cost from $4 to $18, and sandwiches and burgers are $4.50 to $14.

Hours are Monday to Thursday 10:30 a.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday noon to midnight.
