First and South is one more reason Greenport is becoming a dining destination.

The refreshing, comfortable newcomer emphasizes local produce and wines and arrives with fare you could eat all day long.

First and South is open for brunch and supper, with a happy hour in between.

If you're here on the early side, the choices range from Belgian waffles, house-made yogurt  and omelets to especially savory duck confit hash with a sunny-side up egg, split-pea soup and brandade of salt cod.

And try the accurately described "really good burger," an oyster po'boy or the pastrami-cured beef sandwich, too. If you're feeling very casual, there's a griddled PBJ, with blackberry jam and banana. Turn it musical with Tennessee bacon and make it an "Elvis."

Boost the fine, hand-cut fries with house-made ketchup, black-garlic aioli, farmhouse Cheddar and herbs, or bay salt and vinegar.

Friendly service, easygoing style, good prices: welcome to summer. It's cash only. You'll be advised the restaurant has an ATM and the bank fees are contributed to local charities.
