Love the sign in front of the new Salumi Tapas & Wine Bar in Massapequa, the kind of place every neighborhood needs. Lots of interesting wines by the bottle and glass, a compelling tapas-style menu of small plates and snacks and an unpretentious vibe.
That’s what I found the night I stopped in with friends to share a bottle of Nero D’Avola ($26) and a bite or two. Highlights of the tapas menu were the patatas bravas ($5 for crisp, savory fried potatoes with both a spicy red sauce and creamy cumin aioli for dipping), wickedly good bacon pinchos ($6 for roasted pork belly with spicy mustard) and fork-tender short ribs ($10) cooked with smoked paprika, saffron, white beans and chorizo. The asparagus and egg salad ($7), described on the menu as “spring asparagus with 5 minute egg in lemon tarragon dressing," was mostly arugula, very little asparagus. Despite the gaffe, I liked it.
Also on the menu: cured meats and cheeses.
