When thinking of a March day used by local pubs to host special events in the name of a person prefixed by a title of beatification, it’s safe to say St. Patrick’s Day would first come to mind for most – and while that’s not wrong, there’s another such occasion – marked in a very different fashion, for a very serious cause.

Back in 1999, three Irish-American New Yorkers decided to turn their St. Patrick’s party into a charitable event, having their heads shaved publicly to help raise funds toward the medical fight against childhood cancer. The head-shaving was also done as a way to show support for those who had lost their hair to the disease – and as the event took place on March 17, it was dubbed St. Baldrick’s Day. Since that first benefit, it has become a charitable undertaking held in dozens of communities across the nation.

Several Long Island businesses, groups and residents also take part in such events, which are now spread out across the calendar month. Certified through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, those looking to participate or donate can do so through the non-profit 501(c)(3) organization’s website (, which can also provide further information and guide you to who and which businesses are getting involved.
