As Halloween fast approaches, it is clear that autumn is in full swing. Foliage is turning bright yellow and red, the air is crisp and it seems as if pumpkins are available for picking at every turn. And, as it typically goes, many Long Islanders will look to enjoy the season by seeking outdoor fun that is suitable for both parent and child alike.

To that end, Punktoberfest is NOT appropriate.

An al fresco event will be held at the Great South Bay Brewing Company in Bay Shore on Oct. 26. The venue’s website states plainly that “no children, toddlers, infants, strollers, or pets” will be allowed at this affair. Naturally, any partaking clientele would need to be 21 years of age and older, with those in attendance surely to be surrounded by suds aplenty.

In case the party’s title didn't give away the theme, “Punktoberfest” is an Oktoberfest-style bash-to-be, with a selection of imported German beers on its menu -- along with a larger assortment of craft beers that will follow a theme of being either pumpkin-centered or Deutsch-inspired (local brewers participating include Barrier Brewing Co., Montauk Brewing Co., Southampton Publick House, Port Jeff Brewing Co. and the Brickhouse Brewery). In all, over 50 breweries will be involved, with more than 100 beers available from which to sample.

There will also be food, vendors and games to play -- but of all the amenities to expect, it’s the full day of indie punk rock that will serve as the main compliment to the intended cornucopia of beer -- with local acts like Playing Dead, Wiretap Crash, Flak Jacket and Haunted Hacienda (as well as Brooklyn’s Thirsty!) scheduled to play, while DJ Pete Carney will be in-house to spin between live sets.

General admission tickets (which provide entry between 1:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.) are on sale for $40 online or $50 at the door, but there is also an advance $55 VIP offer that opens the gates earlier for its holders (starting at 12:45 p.m.). Anyone attending as a designated driver only pays $15 regardless. For purchase and more information, visit the Great South Bay Brewery at
