You would have thought rock concert tickets were for sale judging by the long, snaking line. But it was only the queue to rent paddleboats and rowboats at Belmont Lake State Park on Memorial Day afternoon.
The park was packed with people — about 100 from Nuestra Señora de Loreto church in Hempstead — picnicking and playing soccer. One family staged an egg race, carrying eggs on plastic spoons, trying not to drop them as they sped to the finish line. Then they had a three-legged race, tying themselves together at the knee with yellow tape.
The races were entertaining to watch as we stood on the line with others who, like us, were renting boats. My husband and I chose the white swan paddle boat for two and spent an hour lazing around the lake. Bliss.
