Bullitts Saloon in Bellmore brings country music to Nassau County

After several years of Matty T's Roadhouse in Deer Park standing as the only haven for fans of country music and its culture, The Nutty Irishman in Bay Shore added a night of line dancing and live bands playing honky-tonk -- giving Suffolk County not one but two different places perfect for dressing up in your cowboy finest and boot-scooting around the floor. However, Nassau remained a country-less county, a place where there was nowhere to hang your Stetson hat and kick up some moves ... until April 16, that is -- for last Saturday brought the arrival of Bullitts Saloon in Bellmore. Now there is finally a spot for country fans west of Route 110.

A flier promoting the opening had promised "Country & Rock," but from the moment I walked into the new venue, the speakers were blaring nothing but that Nashville sound. There will be many themed nights to come, but here's the game-changer: every Thursday starting at 8 p.m. Bullitts will host an evening of line dancing. There's no cover, and with darts, a pool table and big flat screen TVs, even a non-country fan can keep occupied.

Knowing how many Nassau residents have waited for a chance to slap their heels at a round-up like this, we're thinking the modestly-sized dance floor will be pretty full come Thursday.
