Hip-hop fans take note: Busta Rhymes will be performing in the Hamptons on Saturday – and for LI-native rap enthusiasts, this information may be extra tantalizing as Busta is not just a celebrated MC, actor and personality, but a Long Islander as well.
Although born in Brooklyn, Mr. Rhymes (AKA Trevor Smith Jr.) grew up in Uniondale -- and it was from there he first launched his career as a member of the now-defunct group Leaders of the New School – delivering music that lyrically mentioned Uniondale High School and other experiences that related to their adolescent lives in the Nassau County hamlet.
The ‘Leaders went on to produce two critically well-received albums between 1990 and 1993 -- and due to a combination of those recordings and notable guest appearances with other artists, Busta grew to be recognized as a singular talent, becoming an unaccompanied performer by the mid 1990’s. He soon scored solo hits on the Billboard music charts with such tracks as "Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check," "Fire It Up,” “Dangerous” and "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" (billboard.com); also making appearances in such major motion pictures as “Higher Learning” (1993), “Finding Forrester” (2000) and “Halloween: Resurrection” (2002).
Rhymes remains a successful entertainer, and on Saturday, July 12 he'll be appearing at 1 OAK Southampton sometime after 11 p.m., along with DJs Turbz and Erock – and as the nightclub is usually a busy spot, a massive turnout is likely, so if interested in making the scene you should probably make table reservations (631-204-5433, firstname.lastname@example.org).
