In 1989, director Tim Burton’s “Batman” hit the silver screen, and since that time such superheroes as Green Lantern, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Blade, Iron Man, Hulk, Spiderman, Thor, Scott Pilgrim, Superman (not including the earlier Christopher Reeve movies), Ghost Rider and Spawn have also been brought to life on film, while Green Arrow of DC Comics and Marvel’s Agents of Shield currently have network television shows of their own -- and with Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” due to arrive in theaters on Aug. 1, and DC’s “The Flash” and “Gotham” set to debut as fall TV programming, it looks as if Hollywood actors may never run short on opportunities to publicly dress up like uber-champions, master villains, aliens, monsters and other comic canon characters.
However, on Sunday, July 27, Long Islanders will get a chance of their own to do the same as Escape Pod Comics in Huntington will be hosting its latest edition of “Cosplay Sunday” from 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
Cosplay (a portmanteau of “costume” and “play”) is the practice of dressing like characters from such sources as comic books, fantasy films, animé and video games -- and while the Escape Pod gathering won't be anywhere near the size of the costume-friendly Comic-Con International currently taking place in San Diego, it is a committed cosplay occasion -- and will also supply all who attend in character-inspired outfits a prize of two free comics.
Presented by the SPARKBOOM arts initiative, the day’s events also include scheduled discussions with dedicated cosplayers, as well as a horror make up lecture, a raffle, a cosplay Q&A session, snacks and music spun by DJs M.E.M.E. and Orbiter. No cover to enter, but a $5 donation is suggested; for more information visit facebook.com/escapepodcomics and sparkboom.org.
