If you are among the many that love comic books, these are times well-suited to your tastes. Looking at today’s movies and TV shows, it’s obvious that the popularity of superheroes and their evil nemeses is high -- and the interest for some fans can mean not just watching the exploits of Asgardians, Kryptonians, masked billionaires and other avengers -- but actually appearing as those beings they relish.
It’s called “cosplay” -- a portmanteau of “costume” and “play” – which refers to the practice of detailed dressing as characters taken from such sources as comic books, video games, anime and fantasy films. The activity also usually involves meetings between those who share this predilection, and such gatherings can range in size from simple house parties to massive culture conventions that receive thousands of attendees.
That said, if you happen to be an LI cosplay devotee -- or would just like to casually check out the local scene -- there is an event set for western Suffolk County this weekend that may be worth consideration.
It won't be anywhere near the size or scope of the annual NYC “Comic Con,” but local cosplay enthusiasts should note that Escape Pod Comics in Huntington is advertising it will be hosting a “Cosplay Sunday” on Nov. 24. There won't be lots of pomp and circumstance, but those who do attend in costume will receive two free recently released comics and can also take in a "cosplay etiquette" class at 4 p.m., followed by a demonstration in do-it-yourself silk-screening at 6 p.m.
