It’s a pretty common occurrence every summer for devoted fans of dance to drive east in order to catch a bash headed by a world-renowned DJ, but usually that journey involves a jaunt to the Hamptons. However, on June 5, such a trip need not head any further than North Ocean Avenue.
The Emporium (9 Railroad Ave., Patchogue, 631-627-8787) has already established itself as Long Island’s current reigning mega-venue; it features a massive dance floor, a large stage, two DJ booths, a cafe, a beer garden and even a bowling alley. Since its opening last fall, The Emporium has hosted a number of concerts from fairly well-known bands and performers, but starting on June 5 it will add a hump-day party called “Dance Wednesdays.” Every week, the gathering will be built around a celebrity DJ, and – as it is located only a few hamlets from the Hamptons – this event has tremendous potential, as it could possibly draw from both Long Island’s year-round, dedicated dance community and the many summer-only residents that seek the big beat sound on the East End as well.
For the opening affair, DJ Erick Morillo (erickmorillo.com) is slated to spin. Chances are, even if fist-pumping house isn't your cup of tea, it's likely that you've heard at least one track Morillo has produced. As part of the act Reel 2 Real he helped devise “I Like To Move It,” the song that went from dance floor hit to become a wedding/ block party staple (and even the "Madagascar" film soundtrack). However, as a club DJ he remains an international star, and works nightspots and arenas around the world.
Tickets are available online at theemporiumny.com in advance for $30 and could be more at the door. Party starts at 8 p.m. with age of admission 21-and-over; for table service call 631-275-6200.
