Although it’s been over three months since superstorm Sandy struck Long Island, the recovery effort — while already under way — is still far from being completed.
As one might have expected after hearing of all the flooding and devastation caused by the storm, Fire Island experienced some of the heaviest destruction, being a barrier island it took the full impact of Sandy’s wrath. Ranging from the breaching of a new inlet and intense erosion to severe damage inflicted upon homes and property, the rebuilding will be an ongoing — and likely expensive — effort. However, the Nutty Irishman in Bay Shore is going to try and put a dent in the cost by throwing a special affair on Sunday, Feb. 10.
With a start time of 2 p.m., the “Got Dunes?” fundraiser is set to roll for eight hours (until 10 p.m.), and is designed to bring in capital to be used toward the restoration of dunes, fencing and grasses along the vast stretch between the Fire Island communities of Kismet and Davis Park. The day will host several live performances by New York and LI-area bands, such as Rich Mahogany, Illimanjaro and Tradewinds — all bolstered by DJs BK and Chris Kenny plus the night’s special guest MC Andrew Schulz (comedian, also appears on the MTV Network's show “Guy Code”) – in addition to a number of raffles and auctions.
