As far as resurrections go, the return of the Twinkie is up there at least on the level of, say, Rocky Balboa. Beyond our love of a spongey snack cake, we Americans seem to identify with a scrappy underdog. And now the Twinkie is running toward a victory, punching a tiny, victorious fist in the air.

Monday, snack cakes from Hostess Brands LLC will begin to appear on store shelves at national chains including Walmart and Target, Hostess spokeswoman Hannah Arnold said in an email. She did not have specifics on availability at Long Island-based retailers.

Bearing the tagline, "The sweetest comeback in the history of ever," Twinkies will be joined by  CupCakes, HoHos, Donettes, DingDongs, Zingers, fruit pies and mini muffins in their grand return. SnoBalls and SuzyQs, Arnold said, will be brought back "in the next few months."

It's been a fairly swift comeback for Hostess, which closed factories in November due to union and management troubles. Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co. purchased some of the Hostess brands.

Referring to the return, Hostess president Rich Seban mentioned the "inherent nostalgia" of the brand.

“When Hostess left the market last year, people were in a state of mourning," Seban said. "The social media universe erupted with emotional tweets and posts from consumers who couldn’t fathom a world without Hostess snack cakes and rushed to stores to get the last boxes of product. There was no question that consumers wanted the products they knew and loved back."
