Indie will rock the summer at Surf Lodge

Instead of having to haul into the city for some indoor indie this coming summer, fans of the outsider sound can instead head out to Montauk to hear some of the genre’s top performers play outside, backed by the waters of Fort Pond and the sun-bathed grounds of Surf Lodge.

It’s no secret that, for the most part, indie bands and other alternative acts don't gig much in either Nassau or Suffolk counties; a somewhat strange circumstance as nearby New York City (especially the borough of Brooklyn) is among the most indie music-friendly places in the world. While Long Island concert venues tend to mainly offer shows from mainstream musicians and cover bands, the NYC scene features several year-round indoor halls and spots that are mostly dedicated to hosting talent that plays original music in an offbeat, unique fashion (a classic trait of the indie genus). With few local options available, LI indie supporters are often forced to travel into the Big Apple to see such innovative groups and singers in performance, which usually requires buying tickets and paying cover charges.

On the other hand, over the past few summers, Surf Lodge has been hosting a concert calendar unlike any other found east of the Cross Island Parkway – a recurrent weekend program almost completely dedicated to indie music – and on Saturday, May 24 the ‘Lodge will launch its 2014 edition of the series. As of this writing, 17 bands have already been scheduled – many of which are native to NYC and are considered “buzz-worthy” by the music media.

Planning to look online for tickets? Don't bother, as all the shows are free.
