The buzz about Jamie Drake at the 2011 Hampton Designer Showhouse opening night gala last week was that he would soon have a juicy new job.
News just came out that Mayor Michael Bloomberg -- a Drake client, along with Madonna -- reportedly bought a 22,000-square-foot Georgian mansion in Southampton. Drake, the show house's honorary design chairman, has designed Bloomberg’s Manhattan town house and Bermuda “cottage.” Will he be putting his imprint on Bloomberg’s new 11 bedrooms?
The only rooms Drake was talking about at the party, which was a benefit for Southampton Hospital, were in the show house.
“The 2011 Hampton Designer Showhouse is certainly a bright spot on the East End design scene,” Drake told us. “Optimism in big statement rooms abounded. It was a lot of look. There was something for everyone. From the quietude of Robert Stillen’s dining room filled with intriguing art, to the traditional luxury of Keith Carroll’s Scalamandre-upholstered guest room, Aurelien Gallet’s totally quirky game room and Donald Schermerhorn’s super chic '70s influenced den, all of the current design trends were covered.”
Honorary showhouse chairman Mario Buatta raved about the prevalence of color, while some younger designers raved about Buatta and the influence the “Prince of Chintz” has on their work.
This year’s show house is at 1224 Scuttle Hole Rd. in Bridgehampton. It is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Sept. 4. Admission is $30, and includes a journal.
