Mineola: Chili charity cookoff

The forecast for Mineola next weekend is hot, hot, hot. At least for those attending the Long Island Family and Children's Association's Chili Cookoff scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23, from noon to 3 p.m. (rain date Oct. 24).

The fundraising event will take place outdoors, at the intersection of East Old Country Road and Holly Avenue (across from 100 E. Old Country Rd.) in Mineola. Admission is $10 for adults; children under 12 are free.

The afternoon promises to be an all-you-can-eat-chili extravaganza with anywhere from 14 to 30 teams (including the competition BBQ team Smoke in Da Eye from Garden City) in it to win a grand prize of $500.

Judges are Nilka Hendricks, a former contestant on Gordon Ramsay's "Hell's Kitchen" and executive chef at Retro Lounge in Freeport) and "DJ Chef" Mark Weiss.

There will be raffles for prizes. For more info, click here.
