Before 2011, the concept of a rooftop lounge was foreign to the Long Island scene, something one would only find in the city – but by the end of that summer such venues as RoofTop 32 in Rockville Centre, Mint in Garden City and Jacks On The Rocks at the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach introduced Nassau County residents to the idea of dining and lounging on the top of a building, basking in the sun or under the stars.
It took a full year, but now Suffolk County has one of its own, and it’s located right off the bay – or “on the bay” – as in atop the Lighthouse on the Bay bar and restaurant in Lindenhurst.
Located at the very end of Wellwood Avenue, right before the Charles J. Cowan Marina, Lighthouse already had water views. There’s a tavern and dining room inside and an outdoor courtyard for eating, too, and whether in or out, customers can enjoy a menu powered by seafood and beef or sit and sip cocktails. However, head up a flight of stairs and there’s a true rooftop lounge -- with potted palms, an additional bar, tables and chairs tucked under red sun-blocking umbrellas; even a sushi and raw bar.
Open Thursday-Friday starting at 5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday at 3:30 p.m., there will also be entertainment, with a Ladies Night on Thursdays and live music the other evenings (starting at 7:30 p.m. except Sunday, which begins at 4 p.m.).
One important note: nonresidents cannot park in the Cowan Marina between 6 p.m.-12 a.m., and with a watchman on hand guarding the lot, any attempt to leave a vehicle here by anyone other than a true local will be denied.
