I'm going to ramble for four paragraphs, but it's to help set up the information you want in the fifth graph.
Like most Long Islanders who are fans of the New York Jets, I always tried to make it out to Hofstra University once during training camp when Gang Green practiced here.
My all-time favorite memory, though, came in Herm Edwards last year as coach. I was a member of the media that day, covering training camp.
In the stands was "Captain Jet," a gung-ho fan with a cape -- seriously, a cape! -- and a padded homemade hat shaped like an airliner. He was screaming, nicely, at Herm and the Jets during kickoff return drills.
Herm stopped practice and called him onto the field to show his players how to do it. He did. Hilarious. At the post-practice news conference, all Herm could say was, "Uhhh, that was 'Captain Jet,'" and "I told the guys, 'Do NOT hit this guy, please!'"
Well, the Jets will return to Hofstra University on Aug. 25 to hold an open practice for all the Long Island fans who felt deserted after the team moved its operations to Florham Park, N.J., in September 2008.
Practice will be at 6 p.m. in Shuart Stadium.
Generation Jets Fest and the Jets merchandise tent will be open, and players and the Flight Crew will be signing autographs.
Keep an eye out at newyorkjets.com for any scheduling changes that week because of weather and other what-nots. In the meantime, keep up with the Jets in beat writer Roderick Boone's blog, The Boone Docks.
