Nothing beats some Fire Island fishing

“That thing looks like something that would show up in my nightmares,” my husband said when I showed him the picture of the skate that my son and some new friends caught on a dock on Fire Island last weekend.

My son caught his first fish off a Fire Island dock when he was 6 years old, and has been hooked -- pun intended -- on fishing since. But in the seven summers, I’ve never seen him catch a skate. Sandshark, yes. Sea robins, yes. Pencil fish, yes. Skate? I’ve only seen them in the Atlantis Marine World aquarium in Riverhead.

The wacky looking fish bodes well for an interesting season, I’d say. It was great to be back on the ferry, hearing the traditional Memorial Day weekend greetings of “How was your winter?” Winter was great, thank you. But hello, summer.
