There’s no shortage of megaplex movie houses across the Island, but for a change of scenery – not to mention an addition of scenery – there are lots of programs across the Hamptons showing movies outdoors, all open to the public.
One example is the “Drive-In Movie Nights" at Coopers Beach in Southampton. Showing Mondays, this weekly event features some fairly family-friendly movies (rated PG), with the gates opening at 7 p.m., followed by the films starting at dark. Moviegoers are asked to pay a $40 donation per car, with tickets available at the entrance or in advance at the Southampton Chamber of Commerce (76 Main St., Southampton, 631-283-0402, southamptonchamber.com) on a first-come, first-serve basis – the schedule for August is as follows:
Monday, Aug. 8: "Grease," Monday, Aug. 15: "Tangled," Monday, Aug. 22: "Angels In The Outfield."
However, the East End just happens to be chock-full of cinematic opportunities; another being the “East Hampton Food Pantry Fundraiser Movie Series” held at Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett on Wednesdays. As asked at the Cooper’s Beach showings, a contribution is required for entry – so make sure to bring along either a cash donation or canned goods and nonperishables. The August films:
Wednesday, Aug. 10: "The Sandlot," Wednesday, Aug. 17: "E.T.," Wednesday, Aug. 24: "Grease," Wednesday, Aug. 31: "Finding Nemo" (rated G)
Meanwhile, over at Amagansett Square (150 West Main St., Amagansett), Thursdays feature an outdoor movie series, too – here, there’s no admission fee and guests are invited to bring along a blanket or beach chair, with films starting at 8:30 p.m. The upcoming schedule:
Thursday, Aug. 11: “Meet the Parents,” Thursday, Aug. 25: “Up,” Thursday, Sept. 1: TBA (to be determined)
In addition to all the aforementioned, there are actually other, single-night showings taking place in various locations as well. For more details, call Hamptons Drive-In at 631-771-3146 or check hamptonsdrivein.com.
