Food critic Scott Vogel shucks oysters for the first time

Being rather new to Long Island, Newsday food critic Scott Vogel had never shucked oysters before April 28. When Thom Thom Seafood and Steak in Wantagh hosted a free oyster giveaway, making use of food that Thatch Island Oyster Farm would otherwise have to throw away amid low sales attributed to COVID-19, Vogel seized the opportunity to finally try his hand at shucking oysters.
