Usually, when a spot is referred to as sketchy, it’s a reference to expectations of there being a possibly problematic scene -- but at Kreators Bar in Mount Sinai, management hopes all their clientele come in and get “sketchy,” so to speak.
There are few bars (if any) on LI that are as art-minded as Kreators -- as the work of local artists is available daily to view and purchase off the walls, guests can use a dedicated house journal to contribute thoughts and pictures, and there’s an open invitation for anyone (over 21) to come in with supplies and take pencil to paper at any time.
However, for those who exhibit their creativity through music, Kreators also holds an “Open Mic & Draw” event at 9 p.m. every Monday. Singer/songwriters are invited to perform acoustically, and are encouraged to play original music (and to use the session for feedback and experimental purposes, if desired).
All who come to play will get the opportunity, and in the past there have even been “round robin”-style evenings where the musicians pass the stage back and through the lineup of acts after each does a song. Meanwhile, people are invited -- as always -- to bring their art supplies and draw, with the music potentially working as inspiration. In addition, the bar serves handcrafted beer from the Rocky Point Artisan Brewers company, hot beverages, alcohol-free “mocktails” and 10 oz. Bavarian pretzels with mustard or cheddar cheese (the drinks and pretzels are served daily).
