People aren't happy with the new Starbucks holiday cups

Seasonal Starbucks cups have become a sign the holidays are drawing near, but this year’s design isn’t filling coffee lovers with holiday cheer.

The red cups are traditionally garnered with snowflakes, trees and reindeer, a subtle nod to the holidays. But this year’s cup is a solid red sans seasonal decorations. What started as a Starbucks #RedCups hashtag on social media, celebrating their release, has turned into a more gloomy one, #MerryChristmasStarbucks.

Starbucks says it's “embracing the simplicity and the quietness” of the season with the new design.

“This year, we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories,” Starbucks says in a news release.

Whatever the reason behind it, customers are still unsatisfied, with many taking to social media to express their frustration with the minimalist design. Some say they’ve even been giving “Merry Christmas” as their call name so that their plain cups can don the festive words in Sharpie, at least.
