With the leaves starting to turn, and a majority of the East End’s seasonal residents already back in their New York City winter enclaves, the Long Islanders that live east of Manorville year-round are starting to readjust to the calmer pace of life that is the local norm from September through spring.

However, the weather is still very warm, and with all the beaches that wrap the Twin Forks, this is also a time for natives to steal a bit of summer back – as while the shorelines tend to get a bit choked when the tourists, jet-setters and other visitors stake their coastal claims in June, July and August, post-Labor Day there is a lot more freed-up sand, surf and space to enjoy.

Furthermore, although the celebrities are done with their frequent fundraisers and fashion-filled galas (until next year, that is), there are still plenty of big bashes to come that will offer helpings of summer spirit; a solid selection worth consideration is taking place on Shelter Island this weekend.

On Saturday, Sept. 7 the annual “Beach Blast” party will be returning to Wades Beach for a 28th year. Running from 3 p.m.-12 a.m., it’s a benefit for the non-profit Island Gift of Life Foundation ( Admission is $20, which will be collected at the beach upon arrival -- and in return for the cover charge, attendees will receive a full day of live music from a number of popular area bands, such as Mamalee Rose & Friends, Gene Casey & The Lone Sharks and the HooDoo Loungers.

There will be food, ice cream and soft drinks for sale on-site, but guests are more than welcome to bring coolers and beach blankets (and yes, in a sign of impending autumn, sweaters are also recommended in case of evening chill). For more information, head online to
