Spiked bacon milkshakes await at The Cortland

For many, signs of spring include flowers budding, warming temperatures, buzzing bugs and increased birdsong come the sunrise -- but over at The Cortland in Bay Shore, the arrival of the season is recognized .?.?. a bit differently.

As of Saturday, April 13, this hip and popular craft-beer pub (noted by Newsday as The Coolest Bar on LI in 2012) continues its ways of singular attractions by releasing a special drink for a limited time. It’s a beverage you probably won’t be finding at most watering holes -- a spiked bacon milkshake.

The notion of this sort of beverage is not entirely unheard of, as there have been bars and retail businesses around the country that have had similar concepts, but it is unlikely that other experimentations involving pork-powered potions are as dramatic as The Cortland’s concoction.

The drink is served in a tall glass, a conventional milkshake spiked with it with maple bacon-infused vodka, and topped with crispy bits of actual bacon. Naturally, this is not necessarily a cholesterol-conscious beverage -- but anyone seeking to chug down one of these can do so for $12 (and be 21 years of age and older, of course).

However -- hog-imbued libations aside -- there are other soirees happening soon at The Cortland, such as the return of its monthly art  event, Art on Tap, on Sunday, April  21, followed on Wednesday, April 24, by the second edition of the now-annual Cortland Mortgage & Investment Co. party, in which the tavern is transformed into a speakeasy-style jazz club.

Then again, if a one-time gathering is not doable, The Cortland also continues its Thursday 9 p.m. weekly  Rock-Paper-Scissors tournament, which is always open to all.
