It's no secret that Montauk is considered one of the nation’s top spots for surfing – but while catching a wave here is easy to achieve, catching a movie can be a bit trickier – for there is only one theater in town, and it shows one movie at a time.
Currently The Montauk Movie house (3 Edgemere Rd., 631-668-2393, adorned with a sign that says “The Movie”) is playing “The Amazing Spiderman,” and for those looking for more in the way of big-budget mega-films, the next option is miles away (The UA East Hampton 6). However, if you’re in the mood for a flick but would rather see something a bit on the independent side – look not to the neighborhood's sole stop for summer blockbusters but instead a different sort of “sole” — as in the Sole East Resort and Backyard Restaurant (90 Second House Rd., 631-668-2105, soleeast.com).
Hosting an event called “Surf Movie Sundays,” this weekly event will run until Sept. 2, starting at 7 p.m. with a pre-screening, all-you-can-eat barbecue that also includes one complimentary glass of wine or a beer. The film selections are all cinema about surfing, and are shown outdoors, so keep an eye on the weather as a rainy day could forestall the festivities (call ahead to check). Admission is $25 a guest. Here’s the breakdown of what’s scheduled to “hang ten:”
July 22: “Single Fin Yellow” (2005)
July 29: “Blue Horizon” (2004)
Aug. 5: “A Brokedown Melody” (2004)
Aug. 12: “September Sessions” (2002)
Aug. 19: “Glass Love” (2004)
Aug. 26: “The Free Way” (2004)
Sept. 2: "In God's Hands"(1998)
