It’s hard to imagine that anyone who has ever spent even just a single night out at a club, bar or in any other social setting isn't aware that footwear is a weighty issue that falls most heavily on women.
Even when attempting to avoid any insinuation of gender pigeonholing, it’s hard to evade the fact that while gentlemen generally get away with sporting either comfortable dress shoes or muted, clean sneakers while taking in the Long Island nightlife circuit -- a majority of ladies on that same scene are usually spotted in high heels, fancy flats, wedge sandals and pumps (both sling-back and platform) -- a fashion choice that can sometimes seem to be more of a task than a preference.
However, for females who would like to party late without breaking the bank (or potentially their ankles), there are a few evening options on LI that actually invite the wearing of flip-flops; those simple sandals usually used poolside rather than while out on the town.
Two such places fall under one banner as both the Nutty Irishman pubs (60 E. Main St. in Bay Shore and 323 Main St. in Farmingdale) advertise that $5 flip-flops are available for purchase at either spot at any time. Then again, Pop’s in Island Park (15 Railroad Place) has brought back its annual “Flip Flop Thursdays” event for 2014 -- which, while only taking place once a week, does provide ladies with a free pair plus half-priced drinks (from 8 p.m.-11 p.m., drink deal at the bar only; also includes makeover gift certificates giveaways).
On the other hand, when it comes to truly abandoning fashionable footwear, the Sloppy Tuna in Montauk (148 S Emerson Ave.) takes the cake as it remains free from any dress code whatsoever -- and as it sees some of its guests literally walk in from the surf, those in attendance donning flip-flops may end up being among the dressier folks to be found in that crowd.
