As summer comes to an end, the Greek Orthodox Church of Assumption is hosting its largest fundraiser, Greek festival, Aug. 19- 22 in Port Jefferson.
Last year, the event drew about 10,000 people to take advantage of the raffle, fireworks, live music, dancing and arts and crafts. This year, the church would like to pull in over 4,000 a day.
That's nice, sure. But get a load of these raffle prizes:
First prize: 2010 Mercedes Benz GLK 4Matic
Second prize: 2010 Camero IS Coupe
Third prize: 2011 Ford Fiesta SE
Heck, the seventh prize (out of 270) is a 10-day vacation for two to Greece. Anyone want a Hyundai Elantra or a Toyota Yaris? How about an 18-foot boat or a laptop? LCD flatscreen TV or a snow blower?
People normally purchase multiple raffle tickets, as well. Why not? At $100 a pop, it's a bit steep for some, but the payout is crazy.
It’s for a good cause. There might be some trouble finding parking because people come from all over the country to donate their time and money to the church, so you can expect Port Jefferson to be hoppin’.
The smaller prices, if you would call them that small, consist of a laptop, Blue-Ray DVD player, kindle and GPS. Purchase a ticket at the Church office and check if you’re a winner at the drawing on Aug. 22, at 6 p.m.
