Flags fluttering above a red sign drew me to Francesco’s Pizza & Pasta Restaurant, directly across from Walt Whitman Mall on Route 110.
Inside, I ordered a slice of grandma pie ($2.50), which turned out vibrant and crisp. A steaming bowl of pasta e fagioli ($4.95) was golden in color, filled with cannellini beans and al dente pasta in different shapes. All that was missing was some chopped prosciutto, which would have added just the right salty-meaty kick. Even so, it was heartening fare on a chilly day.
Also on the Italian menu: linguine with clam sauce ($13.95), chicken Francese ($13.50) and penne Bolognese ($11.95).
Good to keep this one in mind when hunger hits en route to or from the mall.
Francesco's Pizza & Pasta Restaurant is at 209 Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station; 631-271-3234.
