For more than three decades, The Schooner has anchored the south end of Freeport's "Nautical Mile." Halfway through its fourth, the old boat is better than veteran diners remember.
The decor is pretty much the same, a bit faded and suitable for a time capsule. But the menu shows updates; the kitchen, greater care. And on a summer evening, the waterside, outdoor seating has even more alfresco appeal.
Go for a shrimp cocktail or for crab cakes, then sample steamed lobster or the meaty, pecan-crusted halibut. Good steaks, too. The very chocolatey mud pie tops desserts.
Along a row of restaurants on a popular strip, The Schooner has become one of the more reliable choices, even with those loudspeakers on the patio and the live sounds from adjoining Cabana 435 blasting away.
